What's the matter with the display name of the node? Sorry for the stupid question anyway

I don’t understand why I cannot update my display name on my profile on the dashboard of my node,
even if it I get the confirmation of the profile updated,
and why is the display name publicly visible to other users? What’s the utility? And how can privacy be preserved from that if someone accidentally put personal informations?
